Nigerian Air Force deploys additional aircrafts to the South-South Region, to tackle militancy & economic sabotage

    The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed additional aircrafts to the South-South region, in support of the fight against militancy, economic sabotage and all forms of criminalities. The deployment which is in support of 'Operation PULO SHIELD', was necessitated by the recent attacks by militant group - 'Niger Delta Avengers', on the Nation’s oil and gas installations. The additional platforms, comprising of fighter aircraft, helicopter gunship and surveillance aircraft, are intended to enhance the capability of the Air Force to undertake offensive air operations and intelligence gathering in support of the surfaces forces.

Nigerian govt directs banks to suspend retrenchment

The Federal Government on Friday directed banks, insurance and financial institutions to suspend on-going retrenchment in the sector. This is contained in a statement signed by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, and made available to newsmen in Abuja. “Following spate of petitions and complaints from stakeholders in the banking, insurance and financial institutions, I hereby direct the suspension of the on-going retrenchment pending the outcome of the conciliatory meetings in the industry. “This is as a result of the apprehension by my office of the various disputes in the sector in accordance and in compliance with the provisions of the labour laws of Nigeria,” it said. The statement said that the decision was further predicated on the fact that the continued retrenchment and redundancy by the sector were jeopardising the outcome of the reconciliatory and mediatory processes undertaken by the ministry. “In this wise, all the retrenchments and redundancies done in th

Shell PDCL confirms attack on its facility

The Shell Petroleum Development Company Limited, the Nigerian subsidiary of Dutch oil giant, Royal Dutch Shell, on Friday confirmed militants’ claims that a major damage was done to its oil installations in Delta State in the early hours of Friday, saying the attack had forced it to shut down crude exports indefinitely. The statement corroborates earlier statements by the Niger Delta Avengers, a new militant group that has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks on oil installations, in renewed hostilities across the oil-rich region. The Avengers had shortly after 5 a.m. on Tuesday announced the bombing of a 48’’ export pipeline owned by Shell in the Forcados on Twitter. “At 3:00 a.m. today, @NDAvengers blow (sic) up the SPDC forcados 48″ export line. We warned SPDC not to go ahead with repair works but they refuse,” the group tweeted.

As a major indicator of wealth distribution in Nigeria across income groups, a mere two per cent of Nigerians own 90 per cent of total deposits in Nigerian banks. This represents the wide gap between the rich and the poor in Nigeria, which continues to pose major socio-economic development challenges to the nation. Angry Muslims youths in Kano on Thursday evening decapitated a woman trader over allegations that she blasphemed Prophet Muhammad. The victim, who was said to be of Igbo extraction was accused of blasphemy during a religious argument at Wambai market. The woman, who sells plastics at the local market was in the company of her husband when she was murdered. Contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano Police Command, DSP Musa Magaji, confirmed the incident. He said  '' At about 4 30 pm, there was a disagreement between the murdered woman and some traders bordering on religion. ''The woman was said to have blasphemed Prophet Mohammed, which did not go down well with the mob.  He said, the woman whose named he didn't disclose, was in the company of her husband when the incident happened but the timely intervention of the police saved the husband, who was immediately whisked for safety.

I Own Properties Worth $50m In Dubai -Former Customs Boss, Abdullahi Dikko Says

The former Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Customs, Abdullahi Inde Dikko has reportedly confessed to owning properties worth $50 million in Dubai alone. Dikko reportedly confessed this to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s investigators during an interrogation. Recall that the anti-graft agency, EFCC, had declared the former Customs CG wanted in connection with an ongoing investigation. Mr. Dikko who is reportedly suffering from prostrate cancer which is said to be at the terminal stage returned to the country looking frail and was said to have confessed to owning another multi-million naira farm in Katsina along with a huge house in Abuja. An EFCC source confirmed that the agency has been careful in dealing with the ex-Customs CG based on his health status adding that he was not hurled into detention for the fear that he might die in custody which will in turn make assets recovery a harder task to perform.

Construction workers arrested for kidnapping their boss

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four workers of a construction company for allegedly abducting their Chinese boss, Hang Kumming, in the Ajah area of the state. PUNCH Metro learnt that Kumming, who works in GMC Construction Company, Ajah, was abducted at about 5am on Sunday.  It was learnt that the expatriate was returning home from work, when a seven-man gang of gunmen attacked him, beat up his driver and whisked him away in a car.  PUNCH Metro gathered that the case was reported at the Area J Police Command, Ajah, and thereafter transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja.

  A suspect, Zainab Salisu, who allegedly disguised as a customer to abduct a one-year-old girl, Fehintola Lawal, in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State says she named the girl, Taiwo, and another abducted boy, Kehinde (twins). Salisu, 42, who hails from Daura, Katsina State, told PUNCH Metro on Thursday that she lied to her husband, who she had earlier informed that she was travelling abroad in 2015, that she got pregnant and gave birth to the twins. PUNCH Metro had reported that the suspect, who disguised as a customer, met the victim’s mother, Damilola Lawal, at a shop in the Abule Egba area and requested some items which were not available.

A Nigerian professor in the United States, Prof. Deji Akinwande has received the 2016 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from President Obama, the United States government’s highest honor for scientists and engineers in the early stages of research.  Prof. Akinwande is an associate professor in electrical and computer engineering and the Jack Kilby/Texas Instruments Endowed Faculty Fellow in Computer Engineering in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin.
