Nigerian lawmakers’ immunity proposal satanic, irrational – Femi Falana

 Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has criticized a proposed life pension and immunity from prosecution for Bukola Saraki, the Senate President, and other presiding officers of the National Assembly. In a statement Sunday, Mr. Falana described the proposal as insensitive, irrational, and immoral. “Indeed, it is the height of insensitivity for legislators to propose life pension for their leaders at a time that workers are owed arrears of salaries in many states of the federation,” said Mr. Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

Edo 2016: PDP nominates Osagie Ize-Iyamu as its candidate

The Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State has nominated Osagie Ize-Iyamu as its flag-bearer in the September 10 governorship election in the state. Mr. Ize-Iyamu, a lawyer and pastor, defeated two other challengers – Solomon Edebiri; and Mathew Iduoriyekemwen. In the result of the primaries announced by Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi, Chairman of the committee that conducted the exercise, Mr. Ize-Iyamu, a former Chief of Staff and Secretary to the Edo State Government, polled 584 votes to defeat two other aspirants.

Allowances: Protester lock out finance minister from office

 Protesting Federal Ministry of Finance workers on Monday blocked their minister, Kemi Adeosun, from accessing her office at the ministry’s headquarters as they demanded “unpaid N1.2 billion special overtime allowances.” The government however said the allowances the workers were demanding was unknown to law. Wielding placards with various inscriptions, the workers, consisting those from the ministry and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation as well as the Budget and National Planning ministry, locked the entrance to the ministry’s headquarters and prevented the minister from accessing her office when she arrived for work.

EFCC to slam money laundering charges on Jide Omokore, ex-NNPC GMD, Andrew Yakubu

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has rearrested oil magnate, Jide Omokore. An official briefed on the matter said the businessman would be arraigned alongside Andrew Yakubu, a former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, who has also been picked up. Our sources said the duo would be charged before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja on a four-count charge of money laundering.

19 feared dead in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway crash

No fewer than 19 people have been reported dead in a multiple crash at the Fidiwo/Ajebo end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. the accident involved a fully loaded commercial bus, a fuel tanker and a Dangote truck. The tanker, which was travelling to Ibadan, Oyo State, had attempted to overtake the Dangote truck, when it had a head-on collision with the commercial bus.
