Reps in rowdy session over immunity clause for Senate President, Speaker, and their deputies

There was a rowdy session on the floor of the House of Representatives today following the debate on a bill that seeks to grant immunity for the presiding officers of the National Assembly.

The bill, sponsored by Minority Leader, Leo Ogor, sought for an amendment to Section 308 of the Constitution to give immunity to the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Reps, Deputy Senate President and the Deputy Speaker.

However, Majority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, opposed the bill, saying it was coming at a wrong time.

Gbajabiamila said as representatives of the people, there was no way they should grant their leaders any form of immunity, insisting that there is no country in the world where leaders of the legislature enjoy immunity.

Soon after Gbajabiamila's opposition to the bill, the floor of the House was thrown into rowdy session.

It was observed that the lawmakers were sharply divided along party lines with members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) vehemently opposing the bill, while lawmakers of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) openly supported it.

It took about 20 minutes for normalcy to return to the House, after which Speaker Yakubu Dogara referred the bill to the special ad-hoc committee on constitution amendment without putting any question for members to vote.
